The story of kid caravan

The 2022/2023 school year had started at Colorado Mesa University and each member of the band was involved at the school in a unique way. Max was a collaborative pianist for the music department, Erik was a graduate who frequently taught lessons at the school, and also played in school recitals, Sydnee and Charles had just started their first semester in the music program, and Savvy was playing on the school’s soccer team.

After hearing about a competition, Battle of the Bands, the original members met up, strangers of course, to participate in a harmless jam session. After playing together for an hour, it was clear they had a groover, and that others needed to hear it. They spontaneously entered the competition, assuming nothing but a fun memory would come of it. According to Max, the pianist, the band initially “just sort of came together”, and “then we rehearsed Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday- like maybe six hours altogether, and learned six songs altogether, and then performed them and won this competition”!

After winning the Battle of the Bands, for which the prize was performing at the CMU Homecoming Bonfire and the CMU 2023 Spring Concert, the band began putting together a legit set. Throughout practice nights, they began learning and rehearsing original songs written by lead singer Sydnee Longoria.

Sydnee is honored to have the opportunity to play alongside people who have become her “closest life-long friends,” as she said. Max feels good about where the band is going in the future too, saying “I think having that kind of confluence of enormous talent and creativity, a lot of energy and dedication and really good people is cool”.

Keep an eye out for Kid Caravan’s future gigs and performances, you’re sure to have a good time jamming with them. They have described themselves as, “just a group of people who love music and sharing it with others”. They are endlessly grateful for every opportunity they are given and cannot wait to see what their future as a band holds.
